Supercomputers In India, India’s Fastest Supercomputer: A supercomputer is a high performance computer whose speed is many times and more secure than the general computer. The performance speed of a supercomputer is measured in million instructions per second [MIPS]. While the general purpose computer has speed floating-point operations per second (FLOPS).

What is Supercomputer?

India is now advancing in technology very quickly. India also has supercomputers. We will further explain how many supercomputers there are in India and which supercomputers are there.

I will tell which supercomputer was inaugurated and by which organization and details of that organization.

As of 2018, Pratyush and Mihir are the fastest supercomputer in India till Sep 2019 which has maximum speed of 6.8 Peta Flops and  total cost of INR 438.9 Crore.

The whole  system of supercomputer was inaugurated by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for science and technology, on 8 January 2018.

The word ‘Pratyush’ Being a High Performance Computing (HPC) facility, Pratyush and Mihir consists of many computers that can deliver a peak power of 6.8 Peta Flops. India’s first multi-Peta Flops supercomputer ever built here.

India’s Fastest Supercomputer Pratyush and Mihir are two High Performance Computing (HPC) units. They are controlled at two government institutes, one being 4.0 Peta Flops unit at IITM, Pune and Second 2.8 Peta Flops unit at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Noida.

The High Performance Computing (HPC) facility in India has grown from 40 Tera Flops in 2008 to 1 Peta Flops in the year 2013-14. But India still remained at a lower position in terms of HPC infrastructure rankings in the world.

Government of India approved 400 crore Rupees in 2017 to build a supercomputer with a computing capacity of 10 Peta Flops. The engineers of IITM, Pune worked under the leadership of Suryachandra A Rao and built Pratyush in 2018. The overall cost was around 450 crore Indian Rupees.

With the introduction of Pratyush and Mihir, India hopes to move from the 165th position to gain a position in the top 30s in the Top500 list of supercomputers in the world.
