Jan Peng Jin, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Buffalo, and his team have designed a special kind of ear echo.
It is a biometric tool that can scan a particular design of the ear canal and authenticate the user with wireless earbuds. This discovery has been published in a journal published by the Computer Machinery Association. He said that its prototype was successful in unlocking the smartphone of the user by 95 percent.
This is how it works
The researchers used modified in-ear earphones and small mic. Ear Echo works on the principle that whenever a human’s voice is heard, it expands, reflects, and is absorbed by the ear canal.
This process produces unique audio signatures, which can be recorded from a microphone. The technology of the researchers recorded it by canceling the noise and the rest of the noise and with this help the phone could also be unlocked.
Each ear has a subtly different texture.
According to the researcher, it doesn’t matter what the sound is, everyone’s ears and the texture inside them are different and we can show it in an audio recording.
This unique pattern has brought a new way of identifying and authenticating users just like fingerprints. It is worth noting that in this way ear buds or earphones will also have a mic, which will be able to authenticate the user by sending the information to the connected device.
